| Joseph Carroll Lavelle was born sometime in the early part of the last quarter of the twentieth century. In flight over the Caribbean when he was just a toddler, Joseph fell victim to a careless jettisoning error that parted him from his family. Having landed safely on an uncharted island, Joseph had to fend both for himself and a young girl named Bethany who had been jettisoned from the same airplane. The two came of age far from civilization, knowing no other human but each other. The two learned to survive together and, upon reaching adolescence, learned about their bodies together. It wasn’t until a waterlogged issue of Leg Tease washed up on shore one summer day that Joseph realized that Bethany was not a human girl at all but rather a ring tailed lemur. Come on, give the guy a break, he hadn’t seen another human being since he was a toddler after all. Inspired by Leg Tease Magazine, Joseph determined to adventure off into the world in search of human contact. After great trial and error, he constructed and learned how to operate a small sailboat. Soon he made off for populous North America. It was while he attended high school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that Joseph developed an interest in theater and music. These interests stayed with him after graduation as he moved to New Orleans. Knowing nobody in New Orleans and looking to find a way to make ends meet Joseph took up with a notorious crime family headed by the brutal Trey Boudreaux a.k.a. the Terrytown Fist. This independent and reliable young man impressed the Fist who soon assigned him a great deal of responsibility in the Boudreaux Family’s racketeering. Constantly collecting from gamblers and prostitutes Joseph found himself a regular fixture on campus at Loyola University. Deciding to make the most of his time he enrolled in classes at Loyola, where he eventually earned his Bachelor’s in Drama and Communications. During this time Joseph continued his interest in acting and even produced and directed Three Roommates Early Sunday Morning, a play he had written. While he was still in college Joseph became a star of the New Orleans comedy scene. For two and a half years he performed weekly as part of New Orleans’ premier improvisational comedy troupe, Brown!. His provocative performances earned him the professional nickname, SexySexy Joe Lavelle. As a stand-up comic doing funny songs with his guitar SexySexy Joe Lavelle performed frequently around New Orleans. His songs entertained often on comedy nights at Amberjack’s as well as during performances at the House of Blues and a special show at the Howlin’ Wolf when he was backed by roots-rock supergroup, the Continental Drifters including members of the Cowsills, the dB’s, Dream Syndicate, and the Bangles. Joseph’s great success in the theatre and in stand-up comedy eventually led him to neglect his racketeering. When the Terrytown Fist put a hit out on our hero it was time to kiss the Crescent City goodbye. After fleeing New Orleans Joseph spent some time on the road performing in Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago before settling in Los Angeles. Since the turn of the Millennium, Joseph has been a Los Angeles based actor, stand-up comic, writer, and musician. Among other projects, he does stand-up comedy frequently around the L.A. area and has acted onstage in a highly praised production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and in the film Humanoid, produced by David Schwimmer. In November of 2002 he went into the studio with a full band to record songs from his stand-up comedy set. The resulting Juicebox EP was released March 27th 2003 to rave reviews. |
